Explore.

  • Nature.

There is so much to write about the unparalleled wild beauty of Northumberland that only exploring England’s border county will do it justice.

North Cottage is in the middle the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the beaches of Embleton, Warkworth and the breath taking Bamburgh are a short drive away. The secluded beaches of Longhoughton and Howick are a gentle stroll away from North Cottage.

The untouched wilderness of the Cheviot hills are easily reached from Boulmer via the nearby hillside town of Wooler.

  • History.

Notwithstanding a period of self-rule, the Celts, the Romans, the Danish, the French, the Scottish and the English have all battled and fought to lay claim to Northumbria during its tumultuous past.

Most of that history is still on display in the wealth of castles, the famous Hadrian’s Wall, sacred Christian sites and ancient fields of battle.

As one tiny example, when staying at North Cottage, history is right on your doorstep! Dunstanburgh Castle - which can been seen from the kitchen - was the setting for some of the most ferocious fighting during the War of the Roses (1455-1487).

  • Culture.

For all of the richness of the natural world surrounding North Cottage, there is also vast array of culture, arts and entertainment within reach. The county has provided the inspiration for many artists with hundreds of galleries and exhibitions to be found across the region.

In Alnwick, the Playhouse is home to two cinemas showing the latest blockbuster and arthouse films and a theatre hosting live music, lectures and plays.

Newcastle, a short drive or train ride away, is host to a vibrant arts and music scene. Not to be missed is the Theatre Royal, which hosts huge theatrical productions, the beautiful Sage Gateshead home to classical music in the north east and the incredible Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
